With the different variations of poker available in online and land based casinos, many people are learning to play poker in many different varieties, however most people are coming back to the tried an true seven card Stud. One of the most revered and the most respected of the stud games, this game is a favorite of many people. This guide will teach you the basic playing rules you will need to follow in order to learn this exciting game.
The Basic Rules For Plying Seven Card Stud
The Rules for betting
Before any cards are dealt, the players will first need to ante. In this game there will be an additional rounds of betting, however these don't include the Ante, the anti is mandatory.
Game play begins by making the lowest of the up cards in both rank and suit to bet the amount of bring-in limit. The bring-in is a bet that is forced on one player who has the lower card right after the first cards are dealt. The action will go around the table in a clockwise direction, each player will be required to call the minimum bring in value or to raise, which brings the bet value to the lowest limit in the hand. Raises after this amount are at fixed limits set for each particular betting round.
In this betting round, you will be required to bring in the bet if you have the lowest ranking card and then the lower of the suits. The card suits are ranked with the spades being the highest, then hearts, diamonds and clubs. For the remainder of the rounds, the highest hand on the board starts the betting. If there are two tied hands, the player who is seated on the left hand side of the dealer will be the first to bet in this round. The Rules for Game Play
1. The first thing every player must do to start the game is to post the ante. This must be done before any cards are dealt.
2. The first two cards dealt to each player are face down and are called the hole cards. Then an additional card is dealt face up and is called the door card.
3. In the first betting round, the face up card that is lowest is forced to bring in the bet; it is a minimal bet that will start game play in the first round of betting. This player must bet at least half of the lowest limit bet. Raising will only brings the bet up to the lowest limit. For example, if the table is $5 - $10 the bring in bet is $2.50 to 5.00 and the raise can only bring the bet up from $2.50 to $5.00.
4. The Fourth Street is dealt to each of the players; this is one card that is dealt face up.
5. After the Fourth Street is dealt then another second betting round, in this hand the highest total hand (of the cards dealt face up) will act first (this is also the case in each subsequent round). If there is a pair of cards showing that may be the same rank, the player will then get a choice of betting on the higher or the lower amount of the bet limits. An example is that they can bet the $5 or $10 in a game that has a $5 to $10 limit.
6. After this round of betting, all of the remaining active players will be dealt the Fifth Street card and it is dealt face up. At this point the bet limit will then be raised to the higher amount. For example in a $5-10 game the amount to be bet is $10.
7. The third round of betting starts and the highest hand (of the cards dealt face up) will bet first.
8. In this round another card is dealt face up and is called the Sixth Street.
9. The fourth round of betting starts and the highest hand (of the cards dealt face up) will bet first.
10. In this hand each player is dealt the river card, which is dealt face down and is the last card.
11. Then the last round of betting begins and the highest hand of the remaining players (of the cards dealt face up) will be the first to bet first.
12. The players will now show their hands to determine who has the best hand. This action is called the showdown. When the showdown happens, each remaining player will be able to use any 5 of the 7 cards in order to make the best stud poker hand possible.
Winning Statistics in 7 Card Stud
When playing 7 card stud there are some hands that will win more often than others, each has its own percentage of how often these games will win. If you should have a pair of aces and your kicker is 6-8, you should win the pot about 25%, while a pair of aces will split the winnings about 33%. You get 63% odds that a pair of aces will end up being counterfeited by the time it gets to the fifth street by a triple hand, a straight hand, or even a flush.
