The Ultimate Basic Texas Hold'Em Tutorial
Since the beginning of Texas Hold'Em's reign, it has become one of the kings of poker variations. Many people have found the game easy and enjoyable, and they love playing it both in bricks and mortar casinos as well as in the online venues. The people who are new to the game and want to learn are the reason that this guide exists, it teaches new players the fundamentals of the game as well as giving some strategy to the new players of the game.
The Rules
One of the most important things about this game is your ability to win the pot, in this game the goal is to win the pot and take the money. The pot can be won in two ways, one is the showdown, which means that you must form the best poker hand of five cards out of the available seven cards, or by getting the other players to fold their hand allowing you to take the pot.
The Dealer
The Texas Hold'Em game has a deck with the standard 52-card deck and can have up to 10 players. On the game you will see a dealer button which indicates where the player who would deal, if they could deal themselves. The player that has the button has the advantage for the hand. When the hand is over, the button is transferred one position, going clockwise so that each player gets the playing advantage equally.
The Blinds
When playing the game, you will also notice that you are asked to play the blinds. In order for the hand to be dealt, two players will be asked to play a small and a big blind bet. The small blind is half the value of the big blind, and the big blind is equal in value to the minimum betting amount. In tournament play, you may even find that the blind may increase as the game goes on. Then you go into game play, after all blinds are posted and the dealer has dealt the first two cards face down.
Pre Flop
The first round of betting after the Blinds are the Pre-Flops, this is when you have received your first two poker cards, and the first round of betting is about to take place. This process is called the Pre flop betting round, which starts with the player on the left hand side of the big blind and will continue clockwise until everyone has had a chance to bet or raise. The blinds are the same as making a bets, so after the first two players have automatically placed their blinds, the third player is allowed to fold. Should he fold, before the flop, he will not lose any money playing in that hand.
In order to call the bet, you will be required to match the big blind's amount. The player is also able to increase the amount to be of the bid at this time. How much you can raise your pot will depend on the type of game you are in. The consideration would depend on whether or not the game is a limit, no limit or pot limit game. The deal then goes around the table in a clockwise position, each player will be able to fold their hand, call the current bet, or raise the bet.
The Flop
Now that you have completed the first betting round or pre flop, and there are still a couple of betting players in the game, then the dealer will deal out the "flop" with 3 community cards that are dealt face up. The cards are everyone's and are used with your card that you have in your hand to build a poker hand that you can use to win the game.
Then you will be directed to another round of betting, where player closest to the left of the dealer button will start the round. The player will then check or bet. When he checks he will be in the hand but he does not make any new bets (he also keeps the option to be able to call or raise any additional bets that are made later in the hand). If he should bet, then the next person will have the option to call his bet or to raise him in order to continue in the game.
The Turn
When the betting has concluded, the dealer will show everyone another community card, this is called the "Turn". Followed by another round of betting like the last one.
The River
The final community card given is called the "River", and is again followed by another round of betting.
The Showdown
During the showdown, if any player should make a bet, and every one of the other players fold, the winner will be the remaining player who made the bet and he will receive the pot, he will not have to show what his cards were. However, if there are players who call his raise, then there will be a showdown, where each player will show his hand and the player with the best five-card hand out of the 7 cards wins the pot.
The player can use any combination of the 7 cards to make his hand, using one or two of his hole cards or not using one at all. If the player uses only the community cards to make his hand then he is playing the board and the best he can do is split the pot with the other players since they too have the option to use those same 5 cards.
If the hands are equal then the players will split the pot equally, with extra chips going to the first player in clockwise order. You may notice that your hand is similar but the ranking may still be different so it is very important that you determine the best possible hand. If you are playing the game online, you will find that the program will choose the best possible hand for you, and you will automatically win or lose the hand.
Hand Ranking
There are many hand combinations when playing Texas Hold Em, however in order to determine if your hand is better than your opponents you should have some ideas which hands are the best to have. Hand Ranking (from highest to lowest) run as follows:
- Royal Flush: A royal flush occurs when you have a straight with A, K, Q, J, 10 and they are all the same suit.
- Straight Flush: Is any straight hand with the same suit. The winner is the person with the highest of the high card (Ex. If you have 9,8,7,6,5 of diamonds, and your opponent has 10,9,8,7,6 of spades, your opponent will be the winner because he has the highest card).
- Four of a kind: Any 4 of the same card. (Ex. If you get 4 of any card such as A, A, A, A, 9 means you have a 4 of a kind with ace)
- Full house: Any three of a kind with any two of a kind, that out ranks your opponent (ex: if you have 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, and your opponent has 2, 2, 2, 4, 4 he will win the pot)
- Straight: Any 5 consecutive cards of any suit as long as you have the highest card. (Ex. If you have 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and your opponent has 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 he will win the pot)
- Three of a kind: Any three matching cards with any other two cards as long as yours is higher than your opponent. (Ex: If you have 5, 5, 5, 2, 1 and your opponent has 7, 7, 7, 2, 1 then he will win the hand.)
- Two pair: Any two matching cards and two matching card with a regular card that is higher than your opponent. (Ex: If you have K, K, 2, 2, 3 and your opponent has 9,9, 2, 2, 1, then you are the winner)
- One Pair: Any two matching cards as long as they are higher than your opponent. (Ex: If you have 9, 9, 3, 2, 1 and your opponent has 10, 10, 3, 2, 1, your opponent wins)
- High Card: When you don't have any matching cards and neither do your opponents then you will choose by who has the highest card. (Ex: the best high card hand is A, K, Q, J, 9)
